Q: How do I get connected to the internet?
A: If you have purchased a new computer or are bringing a system to campus for the first time, please bring it by our office in SSB 142. We will register the Wired and Wireless connections with ACS (Academic Computing Services). Please understand that your computer must meet the UCSD Minimum Network Connection Standards in order for us to apply for registration. If your machine does not meet these standards it may take additional time for SSCF to apply patches, install Anti-Virus software, and enable firewalls. Keep in mind that once we submit the request to ACS, it can take up to 2-3 days for them to process the request.
Q: How do I check my email from home or while I’m traveling?
A: While it is possible to configure any Email client to connect to our servers on campus, the easiest and most convenient method is to use Webmail. The majority of Staff employees are on our Shrek server while most Faculty have their accounts on our Weber/DSS server. Please use the following links to access our webmail.

**Please note that when entering your username on the Shrek server, please enter it as username@ad.ucsd.edu or AD\username**
Q: Why can’t I get access to some of the Library resources while I’m using my computer at home?
A: Some of the UCSD Library resources are restricted to on-campus IP addresses. To get around this, you can use a Proxy or VPN connection to simulate an on campus connection and gain access to these resources. Below are a few links with setup instructions for both methods.

Q: How can I access my computer’s files when I’m off campus?
A: There are two ways to access your files while off campus, Remote Desktop (for windows XP users) or VPN (for mapping network shares). Remote Desktop is a built-in feature of Windows XP that allows you to login directly to your desktop via another Windows XP machine. Please refer to our Tutorials section for instructions on using Remote Desktop. An alternate method to access files on departmental file shares is to connect via VPN and “map” these network shares manually. Please refer to the Tutorials section for instructions

Q: I can receive emails, but nobody receives messages I send out, what’s wrong?
A: Although there could be a problem on the receiving end, a very common problem for Weber/DSS users is that their Inbox is over quota. Each user’s inbox has a 100mb quota to avoid mailboxes ballooning in size if they go unchecked. The easiest way to avoid this situation is to Login to your account via webmail and create another folder to hold these messages. Simply copy the contents of your Inbox to this new folder and you’re Inbox size will drop down to 0mb.
