Greetings from David Lake, Acting Dean

I am particularly inspired by stories of Tritons like Jacob Searing, an alumnus who travelled to the heart of Japan to help survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Jacob spent eight grueling days shoveling mud and clearing debris to help families literally “dig out” from the massive devastation caused by these disasters. Jacob’s selfless example is inspiring, and it is indicative of a promising trend of UC San Diego alumni, students and faculty making an impact across the globe.

Just last month, UC San Diego was recognized by Washington Monthly as the nation’s #1 college in rankings measuring “what colleges are doing for the country.” This was the second consecutive year we have filled the top spot. Washington Monthly bases much of its rankings on community service and volunteerism offered by students and, as you might expect, the Social Sciences play an enormous role in this area.

Last year alone, Social Sciences was responsible for more than 500 internships, as students pursued service ranging from anthropological work at the San Diego Zoo to diplomatic work in the Peruvian embassy in Washington, DC. Our students practiced informative journalism at National Geographic, equipped our community for disaster preparedness at the American Red Cross, helped prevent domestic violence and elder abuse at the San Diego Family Justice Center, and protected consumers in credit and other financial service transactions through the Federal Reserve. All told, this wave of volunteerism is a force for good, coming straight from our students and catalyzed by professors that are encouraging experience in the real world.

We truly are a multi-dimensional university and I believe being ranked #1 by Washington Monthly speaks volumes about the caliber of students attracted to UC San Diego. It is important to consider that the student community naturally extends to our alumni who were these student volunteers not so long ago. Today, our alumni are giving back to make UC San Diego a better place while our students are doing the same throughout the world. It’s a wonderful cycle and one I hope you embrace as you read about those who are making a difference in this issue of our e-Connection.
