Greetings from Jeff Elman, Dean
Imagine our university as a home base where UNICEF, the United Nations and other aid organizations and foundations send professionals to learn about effective humanitarian and aid practices. This opportunity is not far off with the establishment of our Center on Global Justice, another exciting evolution in our effort to bridge great social science research and informed theory with actual practices in the real world. You can read about the center in our spotlight article in this e-Connection.
The Center on Global Justice commences with a conference March 31-April 2, 2011 that involves Nobel Prize recipients Amartya Sen and Elinor Ostrom. To find out more about the conference and to reserve seats, please visit http://globaljustice.ucsd.edu.
UC San Diego is positioned ideally to start such a center. Many of our faculty members are widely regarded for breakthrough research that has changed cultures and improved society. UC San Diego also offers impressive strengths in global health, environmental sustainability, humanitarian engineering, political and economic development, and urban planning. Projects abound where social science research can inform best practices for change.
So what might be outcomes from a Center on Global Justice on our campus? Imagine research on effective practices for impoverished communities to grow and eat healthy food, or in distributing clean water, or in providing basic aid after a natural disaster. Of immediate interest is involvement in the UC Haiti initiative, which seeks to help the country rebuild following the devastating earthquake last year.
While these practices can benefit San Diego as well as the world, they can also help our students. By involving our students in the development of this groundbreaking work, we can add to the overall satisfaction and value of their education. As we strive to continuously improve and evolve at UC San Diego, our goal is to enhance the instructional experience through projects like the Center on Global Justice, which we also hope will evoke pride from you, our alumni and supporters.
