C I N E M A N I A A N T H R O P O I D E A

THIS WEEK:

LICENSED TO KILL (1997)
Thursday, 5 June, 7 – 9 pm, Center Hall 216

Based on probing on-camera interviews with seven men serving time behind bars, Licensed to Kill goes behind the media headlines of anti-gay murders in order to investigate their causes. Attacked by gay bashers in 1977, filmmaker Arthur Dong explores the thoughts and
feelings of men convicted of killing gay men by facing them one-on-one in cellblock interviews and asking them directly why they did it. As
seen through the eyes of murderers, the film examines the social, political, and cultural environments of these men and poses the
question as to whether homophobia in society at-large granted them a “license to kill.” UCSD Psychologist Michael Gorman joins CINEMANIA ANTHROPOIDEA on this occasion in order to discuss the film and relevant
research on homophobia and arousal in men.

We hope to see you there this Thursday!

Crystal Skull
Posted on 29 May 2008

With the new Indiana Jones movie coming out this last week, I thought it might be nice to share a little insight into what, exactly, the crystal skulls are.

For more information you can check out the wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_skull
or for a more credible source, you can look at
the Archaeological institute of America’s write up on it (which was shared last meeting) http://www.archaeology.org/0805/etc/indy.html
or the British Museum website: http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/aoa/r/rock_crystal_skull.aspx
The British Museum currently displays some crystal skulls.

There will be no Club trip to see Indiana Jones latest installment(“You call that archaeology?!”) but rest assured that there will be a lively discussion of it at the next upcoming meeting.

Thinking about the future?
Posted on 5 May 2008

As the school year winds down, it might be helpful to take a look at some job resources for the future.

Also, it might be helpful to speak to your favorite professor or graduate
student about the possibilities.

The following might be helpful as well…

Academic360’s job resource page:
http://www.academic360.com/faculty/listings.cfm?DiscID=86

The American Anthropology Association’s job website:
http://careercenter.aaanet.org/search.cfm?

Society for Medical Anthropology’s job website:
http://www.medanthro.net/jobs/index.html

American Association of Physical Anthropologists’ website:
http://www.physanth.org/careers/

ArchaeologyFieldwork’s resource page:
http://www.archaeologyfieldwork.com/forums/index.php

Society for American Archaeology’s job website:
http://www.saa.org/careers/index.html

Shovelbum’s (Archaeology) website:

Hope you check these out and talk to career services or someone in the department if you need any help or have questions. Good luck. =)

Graduate Student Talk Next Friday
Posted on 7 Apr 2008

The Archaeology graduate students will be presenting on Friday April 18, at 3:00 pm in the Mesoamerican Lab (Chem Research Building 315B).

The talks will be:
  * “Canton Corralito and the Gulf Olmec: Exploring Ethnicity through Material Culture”. David Cheetham, ASU & CSU-Longbeach
  * “Mother Culture” or “Sister Culture”? What Gamma Rays Tell Us About the Olmec”. Hector Neff, CSU-Longbeach

Light refreshments will be served, all welcome!

Stop by and support the graduates students. This is a great way to learn what research is going on at UCSD. And remember, that may be you someday presenting your findings.

Dead Sea Scrolls
Posted on 5 Oct 2007

Alright, we’ve gotten some more info on the Scrolls exhibit. We’re going to try and get a group together to go on a weekday right after the exhibit opens. Here’s the info on the prices:

‘On a week day (Monday - Thursday) your rate will be $15 per person with a group of 10 or more. For a weekend day (Friday - Sunday and holidays) the rate will be $20 per person for a group of 10 or more. If you have people who want to join you that are not students, their rate would be $20 on a week day and $24 on a week end.’

I’m going to try and see if I can’t get us in for free, but for now I’m still looking for names of those who want to go. If you’re interested, please e-mail me at nogilvie@ucsd.edu. You don’t have to be in the club to come, so invite friends!
